Here we go again. Another year, another 4rSmBLE and like all the others, it’s good. I’m spoiling the review below because I don’t think any of you had any doubt that the Four Roses 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch Review – 130th Anniversary was going to be anything less than awesome. I didn’t and I wasn’t disappointed and when tasted next to other excellent, cask strength, bourbons it held its own and showed exceptionally well.
This year’s release is a mix of OBSF (13 Years), OBSV (10 years), OESV (14 years) and OESK (16 years). Other than reminding you that it’s made by Four Roses and that it’s the 2018 Limited Edition / 130th Anniversary Edition there isn’t much else to say… so let’s get on with the review!
Four Roses 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch Review: Details and Tasting Notes
In Four Roses’ Words: Four Roses 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch – 130th Anniversary
“Bottled at barrel strength, the remarkably balanced 130th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch introduces warm aromas of rich vanilla and crème brûlée, mingled with ripe berries. Bright apricot flavors greet the palate, then give way to hints of mint, cinnamon, apple and mellow oak. The finish is very long, with notes of more fruit, vanilla and cinnamon.”

Four Roses 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch Review – 130th Anniversary: OVERALL
As suspected, the Four Roses 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch is good. The aroma is heavy and deep with a solid oak profile balanced by a darkly sweet and robust spice presence. The Palate is just as heavy with oak and dark sweets but has an even greater spice character which carries through the finish. That spice though, it’s not done there.
As it sits and opens the spice opens and then further blooms with water and once the whiskey is gone it’s the spice that haunts the glass. The 125th Anniversary (Four Roses 2013 Limited Edition Small Batch) still dominates for me, but this a worthy whiskey creation for Four Roses 130th Anniversary. It’s a great spicy oaky bourbon with a balanced sweetness that I want to keep revisiting over and over and over… until my 200ml is gone.
SCORE: 91/100 (A-)

Yeah bookmaking this wasn’t a high risk decision great post!
I spoke to soon! Happily, they had 2 bottles of the single barrel at Stew Leonard yesterday! I just picked up one so someone else could stumble on one also: it’s as terrific as the last time I found it! If I win the lottery tho I’m picking up the over priced but I know great limited edition the other store I use has for $899.
Woah, $900? That’s the more than I’ve seen it on the secondary for. Not judging your impulse, just the store’s price, I have similar plans for crazy bottles if I ever win the lotto too :D
* here
Josh is Four Roses increasingly hard to find in your part of the country? The Total Wine hear (Connecticut) now list the single barrel as “produced in extremely limited quantities and not currently in stock”: even a year ago I had zero problem find it anywhere. Last bottle I found was at a Stew Leonard (a small supermarket chain in Ct and NY) over the summer. Even the small batch (which tastes too watery for me) is not out of stock at Total… and won’t be in till mid March! It’s frustrating!
Hey Jon,
Wow, I haven’t ran into that problem in SoCal yet. I was at my favorite bottle shop this weekend, K&L, and they had it on the shelf. I wonder if it’s a regional thing like how, for the longest time, Texas got such a large amount of Weller 12 in comparison with other states.
Josh – Too expensive for me but sounds delightful. BTW this post is mis-filed under Scotch Whiskey.
Oh, you’re right. Shoot. Thanks for the note!
I absolutely love this release I put it right up there with al young’s 50th.I was wondering about your rating system over the years,as this is a 91 and the 2013 125th a 97.would that 2013 still be a 97 today and if not what would it be now?
Ha, yeah I need take about 2 months off of reviewing to go back an re-do some things, but I’d put the 125th at a 93. It’s still a solid A for sure.
