Modern James E Pepper Rye (aka James E Pepper 1776 Rye) has nothing to do with the iconic brand that started in 1780 and stopped production in 1958. The new stuff isn’t being sourced from MGP by a family member or restarted by someone who worked there in the 50s or anything like that. The brand was restarted, and currently owned, by a guy named Amir Peay and the fact that he has no relation but is still doing it right is admirable.
Mr. Peay has been collecting anything and everything that has to do with the original James E Pepper distillery which includes plans and schematics of the distillery from when it was open. He did this so that once he acquired the old distillery he could faithfully renovated it as best he could and in December of 2017 started distilling in it once again. And just to throw in a dash of irony he hired one of the distillers from MGP, where he sourced his whiskey from, to come and be his new master distiller.
Pretty neat huh? On to the James E Pepper Rye review!

James E Pepper Rye Review – OVERALL
James E Pepper Rye is a great example of that tasty MGP rye that always carries a nice big dollop of spice and dill. There’s a nice touch of fruity sweetness throughout that compliments the spice and sits well with the light touches of oak. A few drops of water unlock a bit more sweetness in the form of brown sugar and also a bit of chalk.
This is a perfectly drinkable whiskey, but my favorite use for the James E Pepper Rye is making cocktails. The 50% ABV and high spice give the whiskey the power it needs to not just give support to a cocktail but stand out in the mix. A nice well rounded whiskey.
SCORE: 84/100 (B)

Bought it as a July 4ty gimmick. $23 here in NYC. Figured it’s mgp, will be decent. Not sure if it was the proof, or maybe they’re just good at buying the right juice, but this is prob the best value and taste for mgp rye
It’s definitely one of, if not THE best, deals in MGP rye out there. I’m always happy with the casks they get. Cheers Israel.
Love it, can’t wait to try in a Manhattan!
That’s my favorite cocktail to use this in. Complements the sweetness well I think. cheers Ryan!
For me the best version of MGP’s 95/5 rye I’ve had so far, and that includes the Bulleit, Ezra Brooks and Dickel versions. I haven’t tried the Redemption version – and have no intention of doing so considering their BS marketing. Forget what I paid, I’m guessing around ¥4,500 [$44]. Will certainly buy again.
Nice, I agree JEP gets some good picks. Cheers Martin!
Got mine for $24.00…on sale and $2.00 off coupon. Interesting nose…some vanilla long finish…a B!
Thanks for sharing Mark, cheers!
This is a good one. I prefer it over the Dickel and Bulleit (2 other widely available MGP 95’s). Price wise, it’s a little more than the Dickel and a little less than the Bulleit. My go-to for Old Fashioned.
I like the Dickel myself, but it’s really not a bad way to go. Cheers!
It’s around $79 in the UK. I manged to get this and the bourbon on offer a while back and found them both pretty good. Just waiting for the price to drop again.
Wow, that’s nuts, hope you get ’em on a deal. Cheers!
$30 in VA. Just bought me a bottle based on this review and I find it to be spot on. Sweeter than expected
Nice, hope you like it! Cheers John!
When I am in the mood for rye whiskey, James Pepper Rye packs a nice punch for the price. Prefer it over some of the higher priced peers due to its simple, rye heavy palate and 50% abv.
Right? It’s that awesome MGP 95/5 delivered at the “minimum perfect” 50%. Hard to not like it :)
$35 at a Chicago area chain. There’s also a 92 proof sherry finished rye for $40.
Binny’s?
I almost pulled the trigger on this last month but held back as I just wasn’t too sure – it’s quite pricey in the UK. However, I may have to give it a go now sooner rather than later after reading your review. Judging from your reviews, we seem to have similar palates! Sláinte.
Cheers Alan, looking forward to your thoughts after you try it!
