Redbreast 12 years Review

Redbreast 12 is a Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. If you’re not familiar with that term then you’re in luck because I’m about to explain. In a nut shell Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is whiskey that is created from a mash containing both malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in copper pot stills. In Scotland to create their single malts they only use malted barley and the same goes for American single malts and a large amount of the whiskey found around the world. Single Pot Still is a whiskey style that is unique to Ireland and according to Midleton “is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey”.

For over 200 years this lovely stuff was called Pure Pot Still whiskey, but then in 2010 / 2011 the TTB (the same folks who don’t enforce their own basic Bourbon and Rye labeling requirements) got upset at the use of “Pure” and forced the name be changed to Single Pot Still. The ruling actually happened a few year before that, but it was about 2011 when the new labels started rolling out. Regardless of what it’s called it just means that you’re in store for some tasty tasty whiskey.

Mmmm, I tell ya, that Single Pot Still character stirs something in me every time I smell it. Rich, sweet and a little oily that wonderful character is accompanied by notes of fruit, vanilla, nuts, spice, citrus and some light sweet, almost floral, notes that drift through on the tail.

Warm rich pot still malty goodness followed by notes of fruit, honey, vanilla, spice and citrus with a nutty undertone that ties everything together. I love the flavor of this whiskey almost as much as the aroma.

Long slow journey of warm coppery malt, vanilla, spice, fruit and a light bit of wood.

Excellent balance with a rich round body and smooth almost oily texture.

Yum I love Redbreast 12, but that’s also because I love Single Pot Still Irish whiskey. The warm coppery malty flavor and aroma does something for me, it hits me just right. If you’re a fan of Irish whiskey, or just whiskey in general, do yourself a favor and at least try this at some point. I think you’ll be happy that you did.

Redbreast 12 years Value

Redbreast 12 is probably the best value in Single Pot Still whiskey on the market right now. It’s aromatic, intensely flavorful, has a rich full body and usually clocks in under $50. A great value in the world of high quality Irish Whiskey.

  1. Another good review. Thanks for taking all time and making the effort. It is much appreciated.

I had this (neat) with lunch at a hotel and it just didn’t do it for me, for some reason. I typically like Irish whiskey (I love Bushmills 21), but my taste buds found Redbreast 12 to taste more of alcohol than other flavors. I did note more flavors, but they weren’t “there” enough for me to enjoy them as much as I wanted. It wasn’t a bad whiskey. I was just a bit disappointed, since I expected to really like it, but found it to be okay.

Maybe I would enjoy it more if it wasn’t surrounded by the aromas and flavors of a bunch of good food during lunch. I should probably give it another shot.

    • I would definitely try it by itself. It’s a little on the delicate side and I’ve had a hard time coming up with what it would pair with food wise so I’ve just been having it either before or after a meal.

      • I will take your advice and give this another shot in the future. Your reviews have been spot on for me, so far, so it is fair to follow up and see how much I enjoy this by itself.

Thanks for all your time and effort on these excellent reviews!

  2. I had this at an Irish Pub in Seattle for the Seahawk game and this is by far one of the best whiskeys I’ve ever had in my life.

I don’t know or drink much Irish whiskey, but I do enjoy Bushmills White ever now and then.

  3. This is incredible. I was amazed at the creamy mouthfeel of this whiskey, especially considering it’s an 80 proof. Tremendous flavor. I am on an Irish kick, but this is so tasty and impressive. I’ve got a bottle of Powers Johns Lane to look into as well.
